PCC comments on Gatwick drone disruption
It is a tremendous relief that Gatwick has re-opened after the deployment of specialist assets and assistance from other agencies to deal with the drone threat, but there is still a live police led operation underway and I urge anybody with any information to contact them.
The massive disruption and distress caused by the drones has raised a number of questions that it is too soon to answer.
Police forces have a range of options at their disposal. I want to understand whether these are adequate for all eventualities. There are also existing protocols in place for police to request assistance from Government and the armed services.
I will be seeking assurances that the mechanism works as smoothly and quickly as possible which is why I have spoken to the Policing Minister and the Transport Secretary this morning.
They have welcomed my suggestion to arrange a national round table debrief and assessment of the legislation and technical capacity to tackle criminal drone use as well as the inter-agency collaboration and responsibilities.
