A weekend for families to reconnect

Vulnerable young people aged 10-14 at risk of being criminalised have been given a unique opportunity to reconnect with their families.

Funding from the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner’s REBOOT programme has enabled families to come together and enjoy outdoor activities they may not have been able to afford themselves.

Working in partnership with ‘So Sussex’ over the weekend (14-15th September) these families attended the well established ‘Into the Trees’ event. One family thanked REBOOT for being able to allow them to come together and just lose track of time, providing them with a fun-filled day.

Mum, from Hastings was at the end of her tether before REBOOT intervened in her son’s behaviour. Suffering bereavements in the family, her young son struggled to cope and became vulnerable to coercion from his negative peer group. Before REBOOT he had not attended school in over a year and a half.

“There should be more services like REBOOT that actually care about young people’s wellbeing. It now feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders because we’re finally receiving the help we’ve been wanting for the last year and a half.”

‘Into the Trees’ provided them with an opportunity to reconnect for the first time in a long time.

“It’s the first thing we’ve done together in a long time. We were able to work as a team to build a raft and had good fun doing so. I feel that there should be more events like this as it’s a good way to bring you closer with your children if your relationship has broken down.”

PCC Katy Bourne comments: “I am committed to safeguarding young people and giving them opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have. I’m pleased that we were able to partner with So Sussex and help these families bond in such a fun and unique way.”

Programme Manager Chris Varrall said: “Being able to provide young people with the opportunity to come together with their families in an outdoor setting, was exceptional. Families had an unforgettable time and the experience allowed them to build on the foundations REBOOT has given them and forget the stresses of life."
